Hi, welcome to Blue Borage

This all began back in 2018 when I had the chance to do a four week government funded business course.

I'd left a six year job working in a non-profit in the disability sector and was itching to do things 'my way' and talk about nothing but composting, edible gardening and anthroposophy.

I've followed a trail of invitations over the years, working with schools, community groups, workplaces and dozens of home gardeners.

Helping people feed themselves is a marvellous way to make a living, and I'm so happy that I get to work in this niche of redefining waste as a valuable resource, and Soil Makers as healers restoring vitality to the Earth.

Favourite projects

  • 'Circular Tuakau', based at the Tuakau Museum, the Sharda Centre, and the Tuakau Library, helping community groups learn to make exquisite compost, plant pollinator gardens, and learn about the biodynamc preparations.

  • School composting, designing a student led composting operation for a large Primary/Intermediate school in West Auckland.

  • Creating a display garden for an inner city apartment to use for a photoshoot for Icebreaker

  • Circular gardening - oversight and maintenance of a bird sanctuary in suburban Auckland

  • 360 Full Circle Composting - turning cafe food waste into soil and growing flowers for the cafe to have on display.

Popular Workshops

  • Hot Compost - turn your green waste into exquisite soil using biodynamic methods.
  • Worm Farming - start using worms to turn your food waste into soil, even in a tiny space.

Frequently asked questions

Do you do home visits?

I do! Get in touch by email at katrina@blueborage to discuss the logistics, as it'll depend on the travel time/distance, and how big a property you have.

Most of the time my one hour consultation is a good starting point for home gardeners. This is a $250 + travel consultation, and you get an email report within a few days of my visit.

How do I stop my compost smelling?

There are a few reasons for a stinky compost pile, but luckily they are all able to be resolved quite quickly.

The great thing about compost is that nothing is ever wasted - you just compost it!

Which of your online courses should I do first?

This is tricky to answer without knowing a little about your garden, your waste streams, and your aspirations.

Are you in a home setting, or is this for a workplace?

Often it's best to hop on a (free) 15 minute zoom call to talk through the options I can offer you.

(I set up a few slots each week, but if you are in a time zone where nothing suits, then please email me at katrina@blueborage.co.nz and I can add in some evening/morning slots to suit)

How do I start a worm farm?

The easiest way to start a worm farm is to find someone with a thriving worm farm and get a bucket of their worms and bedding material.

There are so many different models to choose from - I like to learn a bit about your garden before making a definitive suggestion. As an independent consultant, I'm not biased towards any one brand.
